Sally Field won an Emmy for this role, not an Oscar. The Oscar speech you are referring to was when Field won her second Best Actress Award for "Place In The Heart" in 1984. And, as for that Oscar speech, it should be no big deal. t was hearfelt and sweet.

Sybil's mother was not "sick and wrong." She suffered from paranoid schizophrenia and never got the help she needed. She was mentally ill.

the last thing that her mother did to her (closer to the end of the movie) that just proves that her mother was sick and wrong. I am reading the book right now and it's jusy as good as the movie

Its an amazing film regardless of her Oscar speech. She delivers in this movie. Thought provoking, tragic, yet uplifting at the end. I was very young when I first saw this and it made me weep. Tom Waits music is astonishingly evocative. Classic. Get the beers in rams, I'm there.
