Batteries have been the main thing holding EVs back, but there are currently alot of huge companies developing Li-ion batteries suitable for cars so we will see a big change in that by 2010. A kilowatt in petrol costs about the same as a kilowatt in electricity, yet an EV costs 1/10th as much as a petrol car to run purely because it's more energy efficient. One petrol car on the road = 10 x EVs driven the same distance, so it definitely results in less oil/coal whatever being used overall.

to the hoster of this vid, you seem pretty knowledgable about these electric cars. Why do you think they arent more widespread? Is the petrol saved actually worth the increased electricity consumption (meaning more power stations that may burn coal anyway?)

Yea, I think the key here is its torque delivery and not in its weight. As you pointed out, it has peak torque at 0 RPM, a feat no ICE can match. Therefore, for short distances, the electric is pretty much guaranteed a win.

Only about 15% of the energy from the fuel you put in your tank gets used to move your car down the road or run useful accessories, such as air conditioning. The rest of the energy is lost to engine and driveline inefficiencies and idling. Therefore, the potential to improve fuel efficiency with advanced technologies is enormous. With an Electric Car it costs just $2.00 per 100kms with MUCH more performance than with petrol at $20.00 per 100kms.

Even the Veyron isn't that fast and it only runs 10's in the quarter mile...which isn't all that fast considering there are plenty of cheap cars tuned to accelerate faster.

Actually NO Ferrari will do 60 under 2 seconds....lol. The fastest so far is the Enzo and that is still in the 3 second range.

Electric cars have continuous torque... That's why combustion sucks... If electrics had another gear to shift they would be unbeatable in the longdistance..
